How can I get copies of police reports? (DUI in California)

I was arrested for DUI in California. When I went to court, they told me that charges had not been filed, and that they would be contacting me. when the notice to appear finally arrived in the mail, the charges were DUI and hit and run. I think that something is wrong, and I need to get all the police reports (CHP) to determine what is what. how can I get these records? I understand that the DA is the place to go, but will they give me everything? are there any forms I wil need to file, such as an informal request for discovery?

File a subpoena for all documents. The court may very well have forms.
