theft/abuse live in b/f

i was living with my b/f who is a sesonal worker and on unemployment durring the winter so durring the winter he was using my mastercard for gas and such which i didn't have a probliem with at the time being as he promised to pay it back as soon as he was back to work (we had been dating for some time and he had always paid me back no questions asked)
about 5 months ago things started getting very violent all are arguments seemed to result in me getting thrown into a wall, i was choked unconcience on one ocasian and had a phone thrown at my face resulting in a black eye on another ocasian he eventually seeked out help and was put on some medication by a docter to help him controll his anger then about 2 months ago he seemed back to his old self i got thrown around and my dog a pittbull/lab cross put himself between me and him he got kicked in the face multiple times and evently bite my now ex taring his hand open when he went to take a swing at him i kicked him out on the spot and he promised to pay back what he owed me (the master card is maxed out from him as well as periodicly he would take money out of my debit acount with out asking resulting in bills bouncing and my mom lending me money to cover them)
i am now wondering if there is any way i can legal go about getting the money back from him??? as well as roughly $2000 he borrowed from my mother??
if it is to late to have him charged with assult?? and what would be involved in that if i decided to???

and on a side note i did mention to him that i would be seaking legal advice on what to do and he said if i do anything at all he will make sure the dog is put down (we live in ontario so there is a ban on these dogs he is old enough to be excempted from the ban though) the dog has never shown signs of agression before and was blatently defending me i just want to be sure before i do anything i wont end up losing him

If the dog is yours, he cannot have it put down. I'd find a safe place to keep the dog, as this man sounds like he's psychopathic.

I'm not sure if you can now press charges so long after the fact, but it is an avenue you may wish to explore.

Yes, you can sue him in small claims court to have him pay back the money. You need to show he has a history of borrowing and paying you back.

Your mother would have to sue him in small claims court herself. If she lent money to you to cover debt you allowed him to incur, she may not be able to sue him, as she lent the money directly to you.
