Confused Friend in trouble

I have a friend who is going through a divorce. Right before he and his wife separated, her 12 year old daughter, suddenly claimed that he touched her inappropriately. This girl had started getting into trouble before this...getting picked up for shoplifting, stealing someone's cell phone, etc. Even though she is not my friend's biological daughter, he has always loved her and treated her as one. He was being strict with her, as far as grounding and taking away priviledges because of her actions (as any good parent would) and she didn't like it. This is why I believe she made the claim. There is no possible way he would EVER do anything like that. I also found out that she had made the same claim about her biological father a few years ago. Anyway, she reported it to DHS and a sheriff showed up at my friend's parents house, where he's staying. The sheriff told the parents he believes the girl is lieing, but needs to speak to him. His lawyer has advised him not to talk to the sheriff, even though he was told that a warrant would be put out for his arrest if he doesn't contact the sheriff. The lawyer thinks the sheriff could twist his words and make him look guilty if he talks to him. My friend wants to talk to the sherriff, because he believes not talking to him makes him look guilty. He doesn't know what to do...talk to the sheriff or trust the lawyer. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

He can talk to the sheriff but only if the lawyer is there and agrees. The lawyer should tell the sheriff if the lawyer does not want the client to speak.
