US Divorce from Abroad? (Bolivia, Florida-USA)
I'm a US Citizen and married my husband in Florida a few years ago.
We lived in Florida for some time and then we both decided it was best for me to spend some time in Bolivia with our young daughter due to financial and marriage problems. We maintained a long distance relationship for 3 years, but I now want a divorce. It seems I qualify to file in Florida as I still hold a valid driver's license, however I would have to travel twice as Florida requires parents to take a parenting class in person before setting a court date. I cannot afford to travel twice nor $2,000+ attorney fees I've been quoted. Getting divorced in Bolivia is not an option as it would not be valid in the US and currently the processing times are several years as it goes through the Supreme court. Can anyone shed some light on how can someone living abroad can get divorced in the US without having to travel multiple times? Thank you. |

I wish to inform you that divorce may be filed in USA if either party resides in the place. The requirement is of residence and as you are in Bolivia you do not meet the requirement. As your husband lives in Florida therefore you may file in Florida. You may file through an attorney. In this regard you may seek assistance from legal aid regarding divorce.
