My wife and I are supposedly trying to come to a settlement outside of court. However, everytime she tells me what she wants and we meet with her lawyer (I don't have one), her lawyer talks her into asking for more. Then my wife makes things personal and talks about how she deserves more because I was so terrible. She's the one out with other men, etc. I've been faithful, going to counseling to try to work on things (but she refuses to try), loving, and I've never even so much as raised my voice at her (that I can recall). I love her. However, I've finally let go because there's nothing I can do. Anyway, sorry for the side-track. So, we were at her attorney's office today to try to settle (she said that no matter what, she would not change her mind or try to change the agreement). Of course, her attorney talked her into asking for more. She asked her attorney to leave us so that we could talk just the two of us. After a little bit of talking, when I said that I could not agree to any more without consulting with an attorney she became violent. She screamed F___ You many times. Threw her pen at me as hard as she could and then began hitting and beating on me as hard as she could. She hit my injured knee several times (which I already need an operation on) then stood up, grabbed her hand bag and beat me on the chest several times. Finally, she raised her aim and I looked down to avoid being hit in the face. She beat me on the top of my head several times, all while I sat there in the chair. She actually hurt my neck. It felt like I jammed my neck by running into something hard or getting in a car accident. I'm not really afraid of her (at least yet), but I'm wondering if I should do anything about this. Should I get a restraining order just to make a point, or will that make it too hard to try to settle with her out of court, if that's still even an option?

We would say you indeed should get an order; at least one that prohibits any physical contact. And if she violates that, she could go to jail. Based on what you have said here, there does need to be some kind of serious sanction put in place.

How do I go about this? Do I just go to the police department and make a report? Also, I don't have any proof. The only people there were in another room and probably didn't see anything, though they might have heard, but they're all employees of my wife's attorney. Also, should I avoid this if there's still any chance of settling, or would this actually help me settle or if we go to court? Will she turn around a get an order on me, which will be on my record for the rest of my life or something? I don't know what types of sanctions or orders there are, which one to get, how to get it, or what it will affect. Sorry I have so many questions, but I just don't know what to do and I don't want to make things worse. Thanks for your help, though.
