US citizen hoping to divorce British citizen from USA

I am American, met a man from the UK, and married him. When we discovered it was easier for me to move there than for him to move here, I relocated with my children. He was completely different at home inthe UK than he portrayed himself when visiting for about 1 1/2 year off and on. I left after 2 years and came home with my child. My other child had left on her own.

We have been seperated for 2 years, and I would like to pursue a divorce from the USA. The law in my state will allow a divorce after a year's separation. I need to serve him, but he is in the British Navy, and all I have is the name of the ship.

He would like to pursue a divorce in the UK, but I am not sure if that would be a good idea for me. I had good reason to leave, and don't want to be painted as a bad person. There is no shared money or property, and no children from the union, thank goodness.

Does anyone have any information on any of this? Thank you in advance for any advice that you can give.
