Unhappy Divorce in Japan

I am a Japanese citizen. I and my American husband got married in NY, moved to Japan 10 years ago. After a series of his infedelity, we filed for a divorce last year. Since we got married in the US, the paper work has to be done in the US also but my now ex-husband is giving me a hard time, claiming we are still married in the US and he says he won't sign the paper. What can I do?

You are officially divorced now --especially if you reside in Japan. If he fails to acknowledge that or takes any contrary steps in the US you can ask the US court to punish or fine him--you could even threaten criminal charges for fraud.

If need be ask the world law lawyers to intervene and make sure he acknowledges the divorce!

It doesn't matter if he signs divorce papers or not. If you are granted a divorce, especially if he does not show up for court, a divorce is granted in your favor by default.

Are you still residing in the U.S? Did a judge order a divorce yet? Did your husband show up for the proceedings? He cannot force you to remain married to him if you do not wish to be.
