Question divorce mediation

State: Illinois County: Winnebago City: Rockford
My wife has hired a lawyer and has filed a petition for divorce based on irreconcilable differences. I plan to answer the petiton, but, have not done so yet since I was admitted to the hospital shortly after I picked up the petition.

Once I answer the petition, whether I hire a lawyer or not, can my wife and I legally decide to continue the divorce process through mediation instead of through lawyers and the court system ?

If my wife's lawyer is a Mediator as well as a lawyer I would feel comfortable if she were to Mediate the divorce for both of us.

My wife and I still love each other. We just need to persue our own lives from now on. This being the case, Mediation seems to be a better choice for our well being and our pocket books !

You can mediate but get your own lawyer. A lot is on the line--your pension, assets, debts etc.
