I live in California. On June 11,2009, I married a man I was involved with in Las Vegas on a whim. We lived together for 1 month during the marriage. He has not worked since the marriage due to medical reasons. We do not have any children together. i own my home which was purchased prior to our relationship and work full time with an income of 50,000 a year. What steps do I take to have the marriage annulled and am I legally responsible for paying this man alimony? Help!

Annulments are difficult to prove. If you consummated your marriage (meaning, if you had sexual relations) at any time during your marriage, an annulment will not be granted. Get a divorce and move on.
If you were to receive an annulment, you would not be required to pay alimony, as an annulment wipes out, legally, the marriage in the first place. It's as if it never happened. |

Doubtful any court would force alimony payments upon you after such a short marriage--whether you end the marriage by divorce or annulment.

WIth an annulment, alimony is not even an issue, as annulments in legalese mean the marriage never took place.
It's correct that you were married for such a short time, neither spouse is really entitled to alimony. You are more than likely going to seek a divorce rather than an annulment unless you can prove collusion or can prove the marriage was never consummated. |
