I got married about 2 months ago. Now we are going to get divorced. I never contacted any one (ie. social security agency, DMV, etc) to change my name. My question is what is my legal name at this time? My new husband's name or that name I have been going by before I got married?

Check you marriage certificate to see if it is listed and changed, and then call your local county clerk or court or office where you picked up the license, and confirm if the name is formally changed--it may be already done if you put in on the certificate--and see below just FYI as well:
Because a woman traditionally takes her husband's name when she is married, a certified copy of your marriage certificate is sufficient documentation for a woman's name change, even if it doesn't contain a space for your new name. A man may need court papers, not just a marriage certificate, to get new documents after marriage if he wants to change his name. |
