Name Change with Social Security
I got married in 1997, and shortly after, we split up. I never changed my name with social security, because we were planning to divorce. The divorce was put off over the years however, because neither of us really had the money to file. Now, I am finally divorced, but when I went to renew my drivers license, which is in my married name, I couldn't do it, because when they asked for my social security number, the names did not match. My question is, should I be able to use my divorce decree as a second form of Identification, along with my drivers license, to change my name with social security? I do not have my marraige license, but the guy at the dmv said my name is legally my married name, which is on the divorce decree, which is a legal document, so would it be acceptable W/S. Security? Also, if I change my name with social security, will I have a problem changing it again, as I plan to marry before the end of this year. Would it make more sense to just get married, then change it, or would I have a problem when applying for a marraige license, due to the same reason I am having a problem renewing my driver's license.
