Default I used consumer credit

I've paid off over nineteen thousand dollars through consumer credit. I reached zero balance on my back debts, and then find out that the bank charged me interest on an account for the car and truck. I thought consumer credit froze adding interest on accounts they take over. Now I find out that I owe five thousand more dollars. Is this legal?
