Default Dad is deceased

My father recently passed away and left some outstanding bills, among these $11,000 on a credit card. My mother asked me what should she do and I explained that she should contact the company indicating that dad passed away. I'm under the impression that she is not liable for the outstanding balance. I would like to know whether I am right or can the credit card company collect from my mom.

In many states she is not liable but in a few states she is...where does she live?

My mom lives in Puerto Rico. I'm not sure whether the card was issued in Puerto Rico or from the continental U.S.

Whether you are married or single, you alone are normally responsible for paying off the debt. The account will appear only on your credit report, and may appear on the credit report of any "authorized" user. However, if you live or have lived in a community property state (Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, or Wisconsin), you and your spouse in some cases may be responsible for debts incurred during the marriage, and the individual debts of one spouse may appear on the credit report of the other.

Have a local lawyer review your docs if the issue becomes critical.
