credit card debt/out of country

I moved to Mexico 2 years ago but had a condo in Ca. I put it for Sale and hoped for a good price. I lived on my credit cards and was going to pay them off from the sale of my condo. The market crashed and I only got enough to pay the mortgages. I had a job in the mortgage industry and made some money until the last few months.The mortgage meltdown. I have a house here and a small bank account. I cannot pay my Creditcards. I cannot file BK because I do not live in Calif. Only have a mailing address at my friends house. What can the Credit card companies do to me other than destroy my credit? Are judgemants in Calif valid here?

They would have a hard time collecting from you.

You likely still could file bankruptcy in California and make the appearance once or twice--where you have your condo.

I sold my condo in August of last year and did not get enough to py my debt.
I owe 55k Will the credit card companies take me to court to get a judgement? I cannot be served.

They have to serve you to do so.

To Rand/ Thank you for your response. Are you an attorney? As far as I always believed, to bo taken to court you have to be served. I took someone to court once and the most important thing to the judge was did the other party get served. Do you have proof of service? Even though they were in the court room.

The judge can allow service by publication in a newspaper in some situations but such judgments are often easily vacated.

Normally they have to serve you that is right.

Thanks again. Do you know if a credit card company can lien my house in Mexico? I mean they can get a judgement in the states. They would have to do a publication in the paper, but is that judgement valid here in the Mexican courts?
