EEK! Collection Agencies Harrassment

I have been trying to deal with various collection agencies regarding business debts that the company I used to work for (now out of business) had. The company was owned and operated by by soon-to-be-ex-wife's family. Why they are harrassing me, God knows. However, now they are sending letters to my parents, asking them to "provide a good contact number to reach me at," or to "simply pass along a message to them." This is nuts, considering I've been speaking to them on a regular basis for over a year. Why are they doing this, and is it even legal or appropriate?

If the debts were of a commercial nature, then you are not protected by the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If, however, the debts could be characterized as consumer, then you might be.

You may also want to inform them --in writing-- that you were not responsible for the debts and then threaten to sue in small claims or other court if they continue to damage or harass you.
