Confused collection agency

I live in Missouri. I recently got a phone call from a collection agency saying I owed a bill of 40.00 to the verizon phone company. I told them I do not have verizon I have another phone company. Hatefully they said this was a bill started in 1994 and owed this 40.00 since 2004. I do not remember having verizon as my phone company. I told them so they said they would make a report that I was disputing the debt. Then a few days later I got a thick envelope with a letter from them saying since I claim a stolen identity I must send them a copy of a police report and it has other form papers for me to fill out. I never told them my identity was stolen, I told them I did not owe the debt. What can I do? Even if by some weird chance I owed this isnt there a statue of limitations or something/ tHIS IS RIDICULOUS TO ME AND i AM AFARAID THEY ARE OR MAY BE HAVE SCARRED MY CREDIT REPORT. pLEASE GIVE ME ANY ADVICE YOU HAVE. thANK YOU.

My grandson went on a trip in 2002 and was injured to the tune of almost 700.00...In the past few months I have been harrassed by calls and now letters threatening me to pay the bill...I did not go on the trip nor did I know about the medical bill. These people are saying I signed the form for medical care.. The only thing I recall signing is my name to call in case of an emergency..The child had medicare ins and number on a form that went with him...What are my rights? Do I owe the bill? Concerned

About the Verzion bill, call them directly, do not call the collection agency, do not send them any information. This sounds more like a scam.

To poster re the trip--

You normally are not liable for a relative's care unless you have full custody or some other arrangement.

First let me say I am not a credit lawyer, but this is what I think you should do: Get your free annual credit report at annualcreditreport.com and find the debt on your report. All three reporting agencies allow you to dispute a debt. Once you do this, the reporting agency will force the company to prove the debt is yours (I think via your social security number). If it comes back as valid, I would indeed go to the police and fill out a report. Even if the police do nothing about it, you will have the report to send to the creditor.

Hope that helps!

Did you notice the last post was in 2007!? Its not likely the thread starter has been back here and very likely the issue resolved one way or another
