What are the best places in the english-speaking world to move to avoid onerous collection of a debt? We have a large debt imposed by a civil judgment in a US state. It's been found nondischargeable in bankruptcy court. The debt is in my husband's name and he has very few assets, so wage garnishment is our main concern. We cannot afford to support our young children on what's left after 25% garnishment. It seems that Florida, Texas, and North Carolina are good options within the USA. Are there any other places in the English-speaking world that afford similar protections for basic, healthy family maintenance or don't enforce US money judgments? Canada, New Zealand, and Australia appeal to us, but we don't know if its safe to move any of those places.

Texas is one of the best to protect wage income.
Why was it found nondischargeable?? |

The judge didn't really consider the merits of the case, but the basic rationale was that even innocent failure to protect funds while a fiduciary can exempt a debt from discharge under 11 USC 523(a)(4).
Any ideas about how to find places *outside* the USA that are protective in a way similar to Texas? Thanks! Last edited by veritas; May 13th, 2007 at 07:10 PM. Reason: not clear or complete enough |

Well there is always Switzerland. Basically 100% protection if you get the right banker.

If we had a bundle of money, Switzerland might be nice, but we don't. We really just want to keep enough income for reasonable expenses and enough assets to function (one modest, but reliable vehicle; pots, pans, a bed to sleep in, etc.).
Anyone put there know about other places with reasonable, basic protections? Thanks! |

Texas generally prohibits wage garnishment and has a good low cost living environment.
