medical debt

I was a Canadian student working in the USA last summer. I took on the additional medical coverage offered by my employer. I became ill one day and they rushed me to the hospital,performed a multitude of unnecessary tests including a 2900.00 CT angio. I believe this was simply a respiratory illness brought on by the heat and I did not want all of these test done but I felt okay since I had insurance. I am now getting letters from a foreign debt collector saying I owe- 1500 of a one day 5500 dollar medical bill. ( I was absolutely fine later that day without treatment) I feel this is unfair and I do not want to pay it. What will happen if I do not pay the Medical Center.

It's best to barter down the bill and make arrangements to pay it off. Regardless of whether or not you wanted the tests, they did them to cover all basis in giving you the best care possible. You are responsible for the bill.

If you do not pay it, you can either be taken to small claims court, or the medical facility can sell your account to a collection agency who will then place the item on your credit report, damaging your credit.

Does your insurance not cover this part of the bill, and if so, why not?

Request a breakdown of the bill and an explanation as to why it was required and exactly what it was. You may be able to come up with a payment agreement with them.
