Help! Credit Card Bill

I hope someone can advise me, I need help. My husband and I have been separated since 2001. I have received a letter from Bank of Nova Scotia saying that I owe them $23,000.00 on a VISA credit card! I don't even have one, but my ex said we used to have a joint credit card which we paid off when we split up. He says I shouldn't be liable for this because he knows these debts are his, he said he ran up this Visa card and has now filed for bankruptcy. I called the Scotia number on the letter and they said I have to pay this because it is a joint credit card! I am so worried, why should I have to pay his bills? I have enough of my own bills, I pay them on time and have a good credit rating. I would appreciate any help you can provide me as to what I should do in this matter. Thank you!
