husband recently died without an estate, but with credit card bills

My husband recently died without an estate, but with credit card bills I am not responsible for. The companies are threatening a judgment.

...and his estate only pays if it has assets...which apparently it did not you said.

I have always been under the impression that once you die your debts are forgiven, especially if it is un-secure debt. If you have secure debt, like a vehicle or a home and owe money; the lender then can recover and sell the property to try and recover any loss.

By no means am I an Attorney so I can’t say for sure. Just going off what I have been told and what I have encountered in my life. When my grandparents passed away all of there debt was forgiven. No one came after any of us, my grandpa passed away first. As far as I know no one harassed my grandma for money – it was all forgiven.
