Default Do collectors for Federal student loans have different laws

Recently, I called to see how much I owed for my $400 student loan I took out in 1981. I was told it wouldn't be covered in the chapter 7 bankruptcy I am planning on filing. Since then they have been calling as many as three times a day. I have told them I have no plans to pay them and they still keep calling me and asking me if I think a bankruptcy relieves me of the responsibility of paying this bill. Franklly, yes I do. I'm sure they must be breaking some sort of law but I don't know what to do. I am 58 and am on Social security and honestly I can not pay them. Can someone please help me?

Cool Re: Do collectors for Federal student loans have different laws

Student loans are not forgivable under bankruptcy; nor can you do a settlement on them. Student loans are generally federally protected and you’re stuck with them. I was thinking about filing bankruptcy myself to wipe my student loans, I did hours of research and even looked into working out some kind of settlement. It is almost impossible to use bankruptcy and settling on student loans only happens in rare occasions.

Just be happy you only have $400 and not $30,000.00 like some of us!

Good Luck!
