Protecting my assets from debt collectors

We are no dead beats! But a shattered knee cap and colon cancer has left us unable to pay our debtors after working all of our lives. ALL we have left is our home which is paid for by years of hard work. However, we still MUST lower our monthly expenses just to "get by". All of are debts are unsecured.
QUESTION: We want to sell are home and move into a mobilehome park we can afford. We are afraid we will jeopardize losing any of the proceeds from our home sale while buying another place with cash from that sell. This is all we have left. Our monthly income is $2300. Our savings are gone. We live in Riverside Co. CA. What should we know? What can we do?

Go to county clerk and fill out a "declaration of homestead".
That will protect you from collectors up to a certain amount.
