phone bill debt in forgn country

i am from canada and going to school in the US on scholarship. i recently recieved a call from verizon saying i owed almost 3grand in international calls. i have no way of paying. what can the phone company/debt collectors do to me if i don't pay the bill (besides cut off my phone) if i didn't give them a SSN. all they have is my school address, my cell # (that they will cut off), my dorm # (which will change soon). I did pay a previous phone bill will my visa. But i have no income in the US other then my scholarship money. I have heard that the debt collectors can not take my scholarship money, and that if i do not pay i will only have bad credit in the US for seven years. Also, i can not get a job in the US or they will take that money. Is there anything else they can do? can they make my parents pay in canada? or make me pay some other way?
