Confused Freelance Work

I recently took a job to design a website for a small starter company. Upon accepting the job I was paid a deposit of 1000.00.

As this job was freelance my priorities are with the company i work with it. So since taking on the job, I've done numerous hours on the website (approx. 8hrs or more) but when work starting piling up at the office I let the freelance employer know that I will not be able to continue working on their project.

This morning, I received an email from them, stating they would like to have the deposit refunded to them within 24hrs.

I have signed no contract and I believe I've done enough work to fully pay for the deposit (My current rate is 200.00 per hour).

Any advice?

If you decided to quit the project after you has implied you would do it all, they could seek damages. You did make an agreement it would seem. A refund would be wise.
