debt collection in NC

I have an old credit card debt that was charged off by the credit card company in 2006. The debt was apparently purchased by some company that buys this debt, and now they are threatening to sue me for it, send the sheriff to my house to take stuff to pay for it, etc. When it was written off, it was around $2400.00. Now, due to interest, it is around $3600.00. They are offering to settle for $40/month at 8% interest. With my overwhelming medical bills and prescriptions, I literally can't even afford this. What are my options? Can they come and take my belongings and sell them? Can they take my car, which isn't even paid for? Help!! Thanks!

They would have to sue you, and win first, and even then your belongings and car etc. would normally be exempt.

Often they will not really sue. You could declare bankruptcy at any time and they would get nothing so you do have some leverage over them to negotiate.
