My ex-husband has done the same thing with me. We have been divorced for 6 years and about 4 years ago I realized that while he was responsible for the account, making payments and it was a somewhat amicable divorce, he was running up our credit line. So I called the bank and closed the account so that at least he could not run it up anymore. Or so I thought. Now, 4 years later, I found he was able to re-open it by himself. I was furious. I called and apparently I had not closed the account with someone 'high up' enough. So I closed it for good this time and got a confirmation number. This is what I recommend you do as well. If you hear of something more you can do, I would love to hear it as well. As far as I know, if they cannot qualify to take over the amount in their own name alone, you're stuck with the joint account until it is paid off or they can qualify (and then you are willing to talk to them to get them to do that, which I'm not quite there yet to see if he can qualify now...)

I would contact the credit company. If that doesn't work, consider a pro se motion but make sure you know where she is currently living and working before you pay the filing fees.
