Can this be Nepotism or some form of Discrimination?
I'm in an issue with a former school i attended. It's a trade school small local school with no affiliations with other universities. It was a joke school. It was 6 month course for like 15k. At that rate i could go to a nice university for 30k a year but that is besides the point.
Ok back to my issue. Well there were 8 graduates at this joke of a school. Any other student could tell you this. Well when we first came in before classes started we were required to take test and interviews for scholarships. They never released any scores to us. Well there were 2 full rides and several other fractions. Well i come to find out this. I didn't get a full ride and at first i thought well there most be some pretty smart students here. (Btw it was for software engineering) So i didn't think anything of it. Well through the classes i was most likely the brightest student in the class, so it still bothered me why i didn't get that. I come to find out that one of the kids who received it was fairly bright. The other one was as dumb as a box of rocks. And im like how the heck did that happen. Well i find out that her mother works there. At first i was like well ok i will see what goes on from here. Then they are telling us how our credits will be able to be transfered to other schools and what not. So I think well paying for it won't be bad since i plan on furthering my education. Well when i graduate i knew i would most likely have to pay them back. Well also i tried going to 6 different area colleges and none of those credits were transferable. So that was waste. And then since me and the one bright kid who got a full ride, we were hired by a company not affiliated with that school 2 weeks before graduation which proves that we were the best candidates. Well then i find out that the rest of the class doesn't get a job with in 90 daysof graduation so now they tell everyone that they don't have pay them tutition. Now im stuck paying because of this. They keep harassing me at work about this which i thought they weren't allowed to call you at work for collections. Im a software engineer so my day gets pretty hectic and then having to listen to what they have to say and what not. I was wondering if i have case here or if it's a lost cause and i should pay it. I mean i have the money but i was completely screwed in the whole deal. |

Whether you can avoid the payment or not is likely to depend on the wording of the agreement you signed when you started the course. From what you describe, you may want to look for a term that outlines when you must be hired for the fees to be payable i.e. does it say within 90 days after graduation? The wording of the agreement will be key.
In order to stop the collection agency from calling you, you could make a request under the Federal Fair Debt Collection Act (15 U.S.C. 1692c). This states that the agency is required to stop making contact with you unless they are informing you that they are terminating their efforts to collect the debt OR that they are taking further steps to collect the debt, for example, filing for judgment against you. The request should be made in writing to the agency. "ae" |
