Confused Loss rights to own a gun with a misdemeanor?

I was convicted of misdemeanors and serverd 1 year on probation and payed restitution in Indiana, when I was 19. Now I am 24 and I live in Mississippi. I had went to a gun show, and attempted to by a small handgun. The background check came back and I was denied of the purchase because of the misdemeanors in Indiana. I sent a letter to the FBI and requested reasons for denial. They responded back with a letter stating that

"under Title 18, United States Code, Section 921(a)(20) and 922(g)(1): A person who has been convicted in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year or any state offense classified by the state as a misdemeanor and is punishable by a term of imprisonment of more than two years."

I have always been told that you had to be felony convicted to loose the right to bare arms, this proves that to be false. Can you tell me what I can do to restore my rights, or find a hole so that I may have this civil liberty back?

Anything will be greatly appreciated,
Thank you.

Did your misd. charge have a possible penalty of more than two years?

Call the former prosecutor or get your court records and see what exactly you have there. Also sometimes those databases do have errors--we see it often.

Yes I could have received a lot more than I did. Since this was my first offence, I had cooperated with detectives, and had shown maturity and responsibility; the judge gave me a lighter punishment. Do you know what appeal I must file in order to regain this right?

Check with your police dept locally as well but I am not sure you will be allowed to have the gun unfortunately.
