Confused i hope someone can help me

and i will say up front that this is comepletely my fault, and i know that im totally in the wrong here. i had to do a reapplication for food stamps last year and i reported that we had no income. my husband had just started working and i wasnt sure it was going last. well, that paticular job didnt. a couple months later he got another job which did last and i didnt report the income, due to other bills being high enough that if they had cut our food stamps back, we wouldnt have been able to pay the other bills. well obviously they found out about this in september. i turned in all of my husbands check stubs and yesterday i recieved a letter from an investigator.i spoke with him and told him what i did and he said that it was criminal and that he would find out how much i was overpayed and if it was under 1000 dollars he could work something out. if it was over, i would be charged with a felony.we still qualify now even with my husbands income but what im wondering is if im going to prison or not.he told me that i would have to make restitution, since i dont have a criminal record but ive spoken with several attorneys who said i need to hire them asap because im facing federal prison.
i am absolutely terrified about going to jail since ive never been.
any advice would be great!
i even told the investigator that i could start paying them back now but he said that i have to wait for him to get my husbands w2s from the irs and find out how much i actually owe which i calculate to be about 13-1400 dollars in food stamps.

often they will work something out with you if you can pay back partially or all, but get counsel or the public defender involved asap if any charges look possible...email WLD privately if need be on the home page
