Who to talk to?

I cannot afford an attorney. I will have to use a Public Defender if you can't help, and that can only happen if I am arrested ( I suppose). I obviously don't want to be arrested. I stole $ through my companies computer system, essentially making up refunds that didn't exist. The main reason I did this was to pay for pain pills, bills, etc. after I was released from the hospital after a 6 month stay with a prescription for many heavy duty pain killers which I got addicted to. The amount I took was approximately $40,000 over approximately a year or so. I was confronted by my work's security dept. and I confessed. My question is : some advice I've been givin by counselors is to talk to the detective @ the police dept, because I've already confessed. I don't own anything nor have any money. Conversely, my step-mom is an attorney (not criminal) who says don't talk to them. Let them arrest you & get a public defender.

Well the confession has changed the picture now. Is there any dispute that you have doe this, or do they all know it for certain. It may still help to have counsel negotiate the best deal you can get. General rule to start is don't talk.
