My son was arrested for shoplifting at a Chicago area Target. He was caught, arrested and taken to jail. Because he had never been arrested before, he was given an I Bond and released after his fingerprints cleared. We went to court and because he is a college studnet and had NEVER been in trouble before the Judge ordered that he sign up for a mandatory 1 day class for shoplifting and after it\'s completed, his record will be cleared. Target keeps sending letters demanding money for the merchandise that was stolen but was retrieved from him when he was caught stealing. Can they really make him (me) pay for merchandise that was recoverd? Please help me!!!

They can require a fee normally yes--it is allowed by statute. You may check with your local DA to confirm your local rules.
