Illinois law enforcement agencies pledged Monday to gather missing DNA samples from more than 50,000 felons already released from prison or probation with the hopes of linking them to unsolved crimes.
Some of the felons could be targeted as early as this week, according to the Illinois attorney general's office, which is coordinating what is expected to be a challenging task. "We're going after that DNA," Cara Smith, deputy chief of staff to Attorney General Lisa Madigan, said Monday after meeting with officials from the Illinois Department of Corrections, Illinois State Police and county prosecutor and probation offices. Under a 2002 state law, all felons in custody must submit samples of their DNA. |
