Petty Theft reduced to trespassing. Is trespasssing still a misdemeanor?
I live in Illinois.
I was recently cited in Illinois for petty theft but had it reduced to trespassing. How will this look on an employment criminal background check? Will it state theft reduced to trespassing or just trespassing? Is trespasssing still a misdemeanor? Plese advice. |

Yes, this is a misdemeanor offense. However, as you mentioned it will still probably show the initial charge along with the reduced one. I am sorry to say that this will show up on a background check and will probably have a negative impact on your employment opportunities. This will be especially true in jobs involving trust (i.e. handling money, being in charge of property, etc.). The impact will lessen somewhat with the passage of the years, but your best option would be to try and have the case sealed or expunged. If you go to the WLD main page, you could get a referral for your area. It would be your best move and could pay off big time down the road. Hope things work out for you. AJJ
