My ex boyfriend has sent me and my friends disturbing emails

My ex boyfriend has sent me and my friends disturbing emails for a year and a half. He tells my friends numerous defamatory statements, such as telling them I said things behind their back. One long time friend did not talk to me for eight months. This example is one of many of a long tiresome list. He lies to friends to try to obtain my current phone number and address as well as my current boyfriend\'s, whom I stated dating months after I stopped dating my ex.. He has sent me emails that say they are from my current boyfriend with defamatory remarks such as, "*****." I\'m at my wits end after a year and a half. I thought he was being a nuisance at first and hoped if I ignored him he would go away. I tried to contact him, in a civil manner last summer, in hopes he would stop his activity, but with no luck. I am receiving from him now, through myself and friends, one to four disruptive emails a week. Most of his activity takes place on the internet scouring sites like MySpace to find my friends and even random acquaintances to bother. His recent attempts to find out my number and address have me more worried. This last year he kept his harassment to the internet. I don\'t want him moving it to a new level. Is there anything that can be done? He has completely disrupted my life and caused me much emotional pain and anxiety. I am currently enrolled in a demanding private college. I feel his constant harassment has undermined my education and given me much undue stress. Is there any charges I can bring against him for this emotional abuse?

If I am not mistaken, you can ask for a CPO (civil protection order) where he cannot have any contact with you, when he does contact you, call the police. He will be in violation of a CPO and can get in big trouble. Also, make sure that you have copies of all of the e-mails that he sends to you, it will benefit you in the event that you have to go to court. You have to have the proof.
