Default Dumb Mistake

I went to a local grocery store in the town I work in to get a few things after work one morning.(I work as a Firefighter). I put a 12 pack of beer in my cart and noticed a NASCAR cooler my son wanted for Christmas but couldnt find. After putting it in my cart, I also got a drink despenser that looked like a football for him as well as he is on the High School football team. I put it on the bottom of the cart. Now the MISTAKE. For lack of jusdgement, I put the despenser in the bag to see if it would fit and he would only think I got the bag for him. I then went to the checkout and asked the cashier if they had other different coolers. She said you'll have to look , I dont know. So I went back to the area again. I saw some, but none his favorite, and went back to ask if maybe there was some in back. She stated that was all they had. So I again went back to the area and looked again, but figured they would get more in sometime later. I went to check out and put my items on the belt and handed the price tags to the cashier together, who rang them up. I paid for them and started out the door and the manager asked to see my reciept, that they occasionally do random checks. I said"Sure, no problem" and gave him my reciept. When he opened the cooler he asked whats this, I stated "Its for my sons Christmas present , he plays football and I knew he would like it". He stated "Its not on your reciept" and I said I gave it to the girl up front but if she missed it I will be glad to give her my Visa/Debit card to her. He then asked me for my ID and I gave it to him. He asked where I worked and I told him and also where I lived, and explained I just got off work. He asked for my drivers license which I keep in my truck above the visor, and told him I will be right back. I went to my truck and got my license(That was the only time I went out the doors after purchasing the items). I then met an officer getting out of the police car and going into the store. When I got back inside, I went to the managers office and he was reviwing a tape of me putting the despenser into the bag. I heard the manager tell the officer that he could make a copy for court if he need one. The officer came out and cuffed me and searched me and asked me my side of the story. I told the officer that the despenser was for my son as well as the cooler and I had put it in there so he would only think I got him the cooler and be suprised when he opened it. And the manager stated "We call we arrest" I told the officer the manager had my drivers license, work ID, and my Visa card and I had offered to pay for the items, but the manager steped in and said no. The officer then asked the Manager can he just pay for the item in question, again he said no. When I was being put into the Police car, the manager came out and said, "If you ever come back here I will file a tresspassing warrant on you, and I stated "Sir, I did not intend on stealing anything, nor have I EVER in my life". I have too much to loose. On the way to the station, the officer allowed me to call my wife and tell her of the happenings and said I will be going home in a couple of hours as soon as she brings bail, $80.00. The Officer also stated that the manager was new and if the old manager was still there, he would have allowed me to pay for the item. After thinking about the incident while I was sitting behind bars for 3 hours awaiting my release, I could see where the Manager was just doing his job and was very glad I was respectful to him and the Officer. I had done a very STUPID thing, no matter how you look at it!! I put my family in a bad situation when iam the only source of income they have. Embarassing, I was a Police Officer before I became a firefighter, but I resigned from the force when I was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder. I resigned because of mental issues of anxeity disorder, panic attacks, and anger issues, just dont mix when you are allowed to carry a firearm. I have been to professional therapy and it will never end for there is no cure, and I stay on my meds. But I refuse to blame this on the offense. What are my options and will I loose my government job as a firefighter? They understand me and I have been able to take at least 2 months off to regulate my medications in the past. Please advise. Thank you.
