Angry Can I sue? victim of police brutality? Help Needed ASAP

Hello I’m posting in regards to a recent incident that occurred august 24th 2008. I am curious if law offices handle these types of cases. Police brutality on a innocent civilian?

I was picking up a friend from work at a local grocery store yesterday at around 3:30pm I entered the store to tell him I had arrived and I was told to wait 15min for him to finish up so I sat in the grocery store waited for him to finish his shift and began leaving the building with him on my way to my car I heard some one yelling stop and had numerous police guns pointing at me and about 10 police cruisers in the parking lot. Me and my friend were extremely confused at the apparent mistaken identity the officer pointed the gun at my head at about 10 feet away and said get on the ground which I quickly complied with, but on my way to the ground an officer ran up to me tackled me, smashed my head on the pavement and began using the back of his gun to try and knock me out he struck me about a dozen times on the back of my head basically pistol whipping me while my hands were behind me back my face was drenched in blood and I could barley breath because my face was in a puddle. My friend was also arrested in the rain and put in the back of a police car after watching me get beat.

I have never been in trouble in my life and I had just been a victim of police brutality while clearly complying with the officers orders. This is extremely frustrating and it should have never happened. After the incident I was told an old paranoid lady might have saw me with a gun in my car, which turned out to be a dollar store cap gun for my friends little brother. They apologized to my friend and drove him home and released me.
There is allot more detail to this event and my back and head are still in pain and I haven’t been able to sleep. I want that officer to pay for his misconduct and abusing his powers as an officer.

Do you think it is possible to sue the police department?
Thank you for your time.
