Please someone i need some advice

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the right section to be posting this question, so I'm sorry if it's not. I have a family member that asked me and my partner to help her find out if her husband was cheating. We went to her house and we all found his password written in a notebook and logged onto his email account and found some sick pictures and what not. She asked us how we could save these emails and we told her about some software that would work so we ordered it for her and took it to her, where we showed her how to install it and use it to save these emails. Did we break the law by doing this, the computer was her and her husbands, and his password was right there. I'm really really scared we are going to get blamed for doing something illegal but we were only trying to help. Any advice is much appreciated.

Technically you did break the law; you cannot enter into a password protected area...but no prosecutor is likely to act if the pw was out there and you did not break in etc.

I've been crazy out of my mind with worry about this, but we were all just sitting around talking about what a creep her husband was and she started looking through a notebook and found the password. And about the software, I hope that's not illegal either to give her it and tell her how to use it. She paid us to buy it for her, so we did. Thank you again.
