Default Sueing someone in the US from the UK

Hi,

I'm hoping someone with relevent US knowledge can help me out or point me to an appropriate law firm/lawyer.

Situation is this: 5 years ago, following a divorce, I helped my ex-wife set herself up in rented accomodation by acting as a guarantor for her rent. It seems that last year she skipped out on her landlord and has moved to the US and it seems, a few months ago, married some lucky American so she can stay over there.

Despite the length of time from when I signed as guarantor I've now been taken to court in the UK and have been judged liable for her rental areas - somewhere on the order of US$8000. Mysteriously since asking her to resolve this issue her phone is going unanswered!. So, all reasonable attempts at getting this straightened out having failed, I'm now trying to find out what options I may have for sueing her for the rental areas she ran up.

I dont believe I can do that from the UK directly and may need to engage a solicitor in the state she resides in now (NY) can anyone confirm this and give any idea's of what the chances are of the US legal system being able to help?.

Regards,
Steve
