Tuesday, the state formally charged the mother of missing toddler Caylee Anthony with childe neglect and lying to police. Criminal defense attorney Mark NeJame said prosecutors made a smart move by filing the charges and dodging a preliminary hearing. “That eliminates the defense ability to now have this hearing,” he said. “And to either attempt to get her out on ROR release and as a tool to allow defense attorney uses to get more discoveries, so by filing timely it really takes the burden off of the state.” |

Casey Anthony was charged with child neglect, a third-degree felony, and filing a false statement, which is a misdemeanor. Police have held her on $500,000 bail on those same charges since last month.
The prosecution's documents did not release any further details in the disappearance of 2-year-old Caylee. They declined further comment when reached by phone to avoid publicity that could lead the trial to be moved elsewhere. Police say the mother lied to them and didn't report her daughter missing for more than a month. |
