Define possession of alcohol... Stepson age 18 was arrested in Indiana.

My stepson age 18 was arrested in Hammond, Indiana. for public intoxication, with some of his friends, o.k. life goes on, we've all done it. When my wife went to pick him up from jail, they had added a charge of "POSSESSION OF ALCOHOL" none of the boys were carrying anything with them, they were at someone's house had a few beers and were out walking around looking for another friend of there's, when they were arrested. According to the police officer my wife spoke to he said "the boys drank the alcohol and therefore it was inside them, therefore they are in possession of alcohol. Now I am really pissed off, this is the most outragious thing I have ever heard of in my life...
IS THIS POSSIBLE??? CAN THEY PULL THIS **** AND GET AWAY WITH IT???

I am not an Attorney of any sort. I am just a simple civilian.
What I have heard of this is called "Internal Possession". I believe this takes place where the law has a zero tolerance law, either it being on under age drinking or illegal drug use, ie; Marijuana. If i am not mistaken the state of Nevada has a zero tolerance law on illegal Marrijauna and people have been incarcerated for not a seed or roach, but having THC in their blood system.
