Assault between family members
Hello,
So im really new to this but have nowhere else to turn. I was assualted by my brother on the 15th of this month. Although when i say assaulted, i was kicked, punched in the face while i was laying on my bed. I was able to protect myself so there was not as much damage that there could have been. But there still was substantial cuts etc. Plenty of people saw the aftermath but not the actual event. However, the plice were called and i spoke to them and they gave me three options. 1 being that they would speak to him and see what he says, 2 warn him, 3 they would charge him. So as he is family and not wanting a family fude to start i said talk to him and see what he has to say. However after doing this.. the police didnt return to me and further the dispute. they just walked off. And they did not take a statment from me. Its now been a week and i have heard nothing. I do want to press charges. Due to the fact he shouldnt get away with what he has done and the fact that since the incident i have been living in the same house we share in fear! He has pushed me arround on a few occassions, verbally abused me etc. so what i want to know, is do i still have a case even though a week has passed? How do i go about this? Do i contact a lawyer, or the police to say i want to press charges? Where do i go from here? Any help would be great!! Thanks |

Since this is between a family member, contact your local domestic violence office and talk to one of the court advocates. The service is free and they can give you some advice according to your state. I hope this helps.
