The New York Police Department says the city could have its fewest number of murders in almost 50 years.
The NYPD is projecting about 457 murders this year, well below the previous low of 497 in 2007 and the lowest since the department started keeping records in 1962. Officials say as of Friday morning, there have been 325 homicides in the city this year. That drop comes at a time when the city is going through budget cuts and the NYPD has fewer officers. Police officials says overall crime is down nearly 12 percent from the same time in 2008, and has dropped nearly 40 percent since 2001. While New York's numbers are among the lowest in the U.S., other large cities, like London and Tokyo, are doing better. |
