Default Army: No indication Texas soldier was kidnapped (AP)

AP - A Fort Hood-based soldier who was reported as a possible kidnap victim was found unharmed in a Texas border town and there was no indication he was ever abducted, an Army official said Thursday.

Pfc. James Gonzalez, 24, was taken into custody Wednesday night during a traffic stop in Laredo, said U.S. Army Criminal Investigations Command spokesman Christopher Grey.

Gonzalez's family had said the FBI told them on July 13 the Army received a call claiming that the private had been kidnapped.

About a week later, authorities received a tip about Gonzalez's possible location and the FBI and Laredo police conducted surveillance on a house for nearly two days, said Laredo police spokesman Joe Baeza.

Finally around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Gonzalez emerged from the house alone and police followed him in an unmarked car. When they pulled him over, Gonzalez initially denied being the man they were looking for, Baeza said.

The FBI interviewed Gonzalez at their Laredo office and he was later taken to the Webb County jail where he waited for the Army to pick him up, Baeza said. Gonzalez could be facing state charges in addition to discipline from the Army, but no decision had been made about the state charges, Baeza said.
