Unhappy credit card collections

I had to go on total disability in March 2004. I have a $500 a month drug bill. My question is several of the credit cards are with the bank that I have my checking account with. Can they take money from my checking account or can they garnish my Social Security Disability Check? It's not that I don't want to pay but I have to chose to either pay the credit card payment or buy my medicine. In the last 3 years I have had over $8,000.00 in out of pocket medicine bills. This does not include hospital, doctor and therapy bills. I live in North Carolina
What do you suggest?

They have to sue you in court first, and win...

then see http://www.worldlawdirect.com/article/935 -- Collecting on a court judgment.

My son did some online gambling and could not stop him self. He ended up going into a mental institution for several weeks to get a handle on things. He had also been involved with some drugs while online He just recieved a notice after a long period of time from a collection agency saying he has a 2000. What should he do about this dept.

It may be too old -- See debts and judgments: http://www.worldlawdirect.com/article.php?id=1758

If it is still valid then he could try to work out a payment or even declare bankruptcy if need be.
