Default credit card debt of college student

My son attended college for one year after high school fall 1998 - fall 1999. during this time, he applied for a credit card using my name and income(without my knowledge)along with his information, since he did not have enough income on his own. He lied about my income to qualify for card. He paid on debt until 2004, but then stopped paying. The company is saying I am responsible for card since he was a student when he applied for card. Can I be held financially responsible for this debt?
