Default Court hears appeal on Massachusetts wine shipment law

On Monday, the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston is scheduled to hear arguments on the law that for years has been fermenting opposition from out-of-state wine producers, as well as connoisseurs like Gerald Leader who would prefer to order their bottles through the Internet or mail order.

Default Court hears appeal on Massachusetts wine shipment law

Nearly a year after winning a federal court battle that opened the doors for all out-of-state wineries to ship directly to the doorsteps of Massachusetts residents, a California trade group was back in a Boston courtroom yesterday to argue against the state’s appeal.

The attorney for Family Winemakers of California said current state law prevents direct-to-consumer shipments of 98 percent of wine produced out of state, while allowing all Massachusetts wineries to directly deliver their products.
