Hi.
I'm currently writing a program that you install on your computer and it tells you when new versions of your software come out. I was planning to use softpedia.com to download a few htmls to find out the version number (it just extracts that information from the page), but I am wondering if that would be fair use.. because I'm pretty sure a version number (such as 2.02) is only fact.. and cannot be copyrighted. Any ideas? Thanks. |

You can say version number x--that is not protected, if that is what you are asking.

But what if I'm doing that directly from their site.. like the people who use my program connect to their site.

You can link but cannot hide it and cannot make it look like it is your information.
