Default Software Copyrights

Hi,

I created a software at my current employee as an employee and understand that this means the software belongs to my employeer. I think I have a good idea that stems from what I created and will work a little differently. However, I realize I will need to get permission to sell any form of this software before I do.

My question is, it is OK if I talk to other potential clients about the software to see if there is a geniune interest in my idea before I ask permission from my employeer?

I'd like to talk to some potential buyers before I risk talking to my employer and open that can of worms, or would it be wise to talk to my employeer first in case if they hear what I am doing from a 3rd party?

I want to pursue things the right way, and looking for advice on how to do this!

Thank you!!!

I can certainly understand your desire here, but in reality the most prudent move is to clear everything through your employer. Doing otherwise could subject you to disciplinary action and perhaps even a civil lawsuit. I would recommend playing it safe and making sure your employer approves of what you propose doing. AJJ

You should not be engaged in activities that are the domain or area of your employer, for reasons you cite.

thank you very much! If I ask permission do I run the risk of getting fired at all?
