My son had his 99 Yukon towed to a local garage because it wouldn't start. He had disconnected the gas line to see if the fuel pump was working but told the mechanic to reconnect it before they tried to start it, but they didn't and it caught on fire under the hood and burned most of the parts. They have now had it almost a month and they still say they don't have all of the parts to fix it and still don't know if it will run.He was wondering if he would have a case in court if he got a laywer?

Based on what you say here, you could file suit against them (or at least threaten to do so) in small claims court or in regular court; filing in small claims court is easier and requires no attorney...you could try to collect all of the costs and damages that you suffered due to their behavior...
