Default storage fees for junk car

My son's car was towed to a repair shop. A mechanic looked at it and determined that the engine was shot. We decided that the car was not worth fixing . I asked specifically if there would be storage fees. I was told no but they wanted it out of there as soon as possible. I told them that I had to find the title and would either give it to them to salvage the car or have it towed away.A week later my son's friend went to have the car towed but they would not release the car until the diagnostic fee of $85 and storage fees of $25 a day were paid. It is now 2 weeks later and fees are mounting. The car is over 100 miles away in another state so it is very difficult for me to deal with.

Do we have to pay the storage fees? What will happen if we don't?

You can sue them in small claims over the disagreement.

Tenants on my rental property stored 3 unlicensed/inoperable vehicles there. They have been evicted for not paying rent. They were told to move the vehicles months ago. Can I charge them a storage fee?

You can have the cars removed and taken to a storage or junk lot, but give 30 days notice.

You can try to charge them but unless they agreed it is hard to make that stick in court.
